Tiscali pays £210m for Pipex assets

Tiscali, the internet service provider currently rolling out its Tiscali TV triple-play of digital TV, broadband and voice telephony across the UK, has acquired the broadband and voice assets of Pipex for £210m.

The deal will add a further 570,000 broadband and 650,000 voice customers to Tiscali, which will have 1.9m broadband customers.

Tiscali UK has unbundled 800 exchanges, reaching 55% of UK homes with plans to extend this network to over 1,000 exchanges.

Mary Turner, CEO of Tiscali UK, said: "The acquisition of Pipex's broadband and voice division further cements Tiscali's position as a fully integrated telecom and media operator in the top league of the UK market and underlines our reputation as a major investor and innovator in the full range of broadband services."

Meanwhile Tiscali has chosen Italian broadband technology company Telsey to supply its FS600 hybrid IP set-top box. The FS600 combines an IPTV receiver with a digital terrestrial tuner and digital TV recorder, and will be rolled out by Tiscali in the UK and Italy.
