Default LiveStation tackles streaming headache

Internet technology group Skinkers has devised a peer-to-peer live video streaming platform aimed at overcoming one of online streaming biggest bugbears: buffering.

Known as LiveStation, and built using technology partly funded by Microsoft's internet ventures initiative, the platform is currently being tested by developers.

Skinkers' CEO Matteo Berlucchi said LiveStation had been designed to remove the chance of buffering taking place. "When you're watching live TV on a computer with traditional streaming, the most annoying thing is when the stream stops and starts buffering," said Berlucchi.

Another consideration for broadcasters seeking to stream content online was the cost of reaching audiences. "Current streaming techniques require expensive infrastructure demands to serve relatively small audiences. The start up cost for the narrow audiences is too high, and for the larger audiences the cost becomes prohibitive because of the issues of infrastructure scalability.

"With Skinkers LiveStation, broadcasters can reach small audiences very cost effectively, but can also scale up to very large audiences for a fraction of the cost while guaranteeing a rich user experience with minimal latency and no buffering."
