Default Agreement on exchange of Azerbaijani-Russian TV channels

Nushirevan Maharramli, the chairman of Azerbaijan’s National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council, has stated that an agreement on joint broadcasting of Azerbaijani-Russian channels is expected to be signed during a meeting in Baku scheduled on 22-24 July. The Council made the decision to suspend the broadcasting of foreign channels through local frequencies. All foreign channels must be broadcast by cable or satellite television. It was decided to stop the broadcasting of Russian RTR, ORT as well as the Turkish D Channel and STV channels in the country.

The chairman of the Council stated that negotiations on the broadcasting of Azerbaijani AzTV channel in Russia and the Russian RTR in Azerbaijan is currently in progress. “The Russian delegation will come to Azerbaijan on 22-24 July and both parties will discuss the issue when a final decision will be made. Russia has not disclosed its position as yet. We will express our opinion after Russia,” Maharramli noted.

According to Maharramli, Russia accepted a range of conditions by Azerbaijan, including territorial integrity, state sovereignty and others. The broadcasting of the Russian RTR channel will not be terminated in Azerbaijan should the Azerbaijani-Russian parties come to an agreement within a month.
