Default encription breaking

So out of all the encryption modes used which can be patched?

Powerva
irdeto 2
videoguard
cryptwrks
viaccess 2.3,2.5,2.6
mediaguarg 2
nagravision 2
conay
betacrypt

The above seam to be the ones used.

So once I learn how to patch what systems can I expect to get a look at?

Without waffling on for ages about this, it's more often not which encryption systems are 'hacked' but which specific providers are open.

One encryption 'brand' can be open for one provider but not for another. This can be down to having a bad employee selling the keys and code out the back door, certain card issues being faulty and leaking keys, a specific receiver/firmware being forced open and leaking keys, code being reverse-engineered, hacking groups holding and/or selling keys etc. etc. etc. They might also be running different versions, or customised versions, only some of which are broken.

Many providers are also running multiple encryption systems on their bouquet. This is usually for historical reasons - maybe companies have merged or been taken over, and the customers' receivers are only capable of decoding one type of encryption. Maybe they have changed encryption supplier, effectively 'upgrading' after a successful attack by the pirates.

There are also many older versions of these encryption systems out there, which are all wide open and which are still occasionally used for temporary feeds etc. There are also 'fallback' methods, where if the main system is switched off for scheduled maintenance or whatever, something temporary can be put in place to stop Joe Public watching.

For example, Conax was 'hacked' on 1W for many years, except it really wasn't at all. It was a dodgy subscription card version they had in circulation, and once a new card was finally issued to all genuine customers, we were all looking at black screens. This will happen to TV CABO in the next few weeks. Whereas Conax was actually pretty solid, Nagravision is listing dangerously to starboard and shipping a disturbing amount of water, and I think this could be a waste of time for them.

So why isn't every provider at least using the latest version of each encryption system and the latest secure subscription card release?

$Money.

Oh, and BTW, IIRC Cryptoworks was 'hacked' just about the same time as it was bought by Irdeto...

Coincidence?

I see, so the patches open up a group of stations on a certain network and not a whole encryption code.

can you load more than one patch onto a receiver, to open up more than one network?

Normally the patch covers everything m8 so there is only 1 patch needed

Thanks thats made it clearer now

Been playing on the back lawn with a dish, Neighbour asked if I had started working for MI5 or the resistance (come in nighthalk) I think I am going to be limited what I can pick up, in the garden things keep getting in the way like, the house and on the flat roof its the front corner of my house and the neighbours > I might just end up with hot bird and Astra 1 and forget a motorised system
