Default Active at last

Hello again

Its been a while but I have eventually bought a dish to go with the skystar 2 receiver I got at xmas. The dish is an aldi (80cm) cheapy but it works, I think also bought the cheap 6db LNB. I have managed to find 19.2E where I am getting about 80% on signal and 80% on quality after much tweaking (the scale on the side of the dish tells lies). I have also managed to find 13E but the signal and quality read about 53%. Is this the norm for my area or do I need to tweak things a bit more.

I live about 15miles North of Newcastle by the way.

I would also like to know what other satellites I would be able to find using the current setup as I have noticed that the toon is on 30W tomorrow, is this too far me thinks it may be.

You should be able to get 13East better than that with an 80cm dish I think, see if you can adjust your dish and get a better signal. It could also be due to crappy cable, or a bad connection (did you put the F-Plugs on yourself?)

You should be able to get something from the european beam on 30W. The footprints are here:

http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...ic,5185.0.html
http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...ic,5184.0.html

Also in that area is Arabsat at 30.5West, but you'd need a massive dish for that

Not sure which satellite at 30W you were after mind you...

Howay the lads.

Gav's advice is right you should probably get a really good signal with an 80 dish. try what he suggested.

I can even get 19e and half of 13e through double glazing here in London. Tomorrows match is on SportTV1 at 30w. Note that the keys for this change every couple of days. The signal is very strong for 30W.

Unless you have a motorised dish, my advice for 30W is to skew the Lnb to about 5 oclock rather than the 7 oclock for 19e. It makes all the difference for me.

I saw the Celtic game on that channel and I shall be watching tomorrow if the weather is Ok. For 30W I need to put my dish on a hatstand on the patio!!

I'm from Bedlington (Stakeford) by the way originally. Where are you from.

Good luck tomorrow - and the rest og the season

Its strange you say that about the aldi dish and hotbird. I have a 60cm aldi or lidl dish 60cm. it picks up Astra 1 and Astra 2 at about 70-75% quality, but no matter what I do with it I can only get hotbird at 50-55% quality. A sky mini dish however gives 68-72% quality on hotbird :? could be a German conspiracy to keep people watching Astra

Nah its more than likely that you haven't got the lnb skew correctly setup

Well done notaclue, and welcome back into the fold

LNB skew is going to be a major factor for all you manual dish-swingers. Use the SMW utility linked in our utility section to calculate your skew properly for each satellite.

Sliding the LNB backwards and forwards in the holder to maximise signal quality will also prove fruitful.

Hotbird reception should wind up being fairly similar to Astra1 for most of the UK. Maybe not quite as good.

Believe me I have tyred changing the skew clockwise and anti clockwise, forward and back, even tried different NBS but can never get quality over 55%

Thanks for the replies.

I am going to firstly look at the f-connectors to make sure I dont have any shorts. Then Ill have a go with the skew, is positive skew clockwise or anti clockwise from the perspective of looking at the dish from the front and should I believe the scale on the LNB. Also is the LNB any good as it was only £3.99 it is a 0.6dB model would changing it improve results.

As for the match I decided to go and pay my £15 pound to go to St james Park but unfortunately due to utter incompetence with the ticket staff missed both goals and only seen the second half. > It then took me two hours to get home (should have watched it on the telly). Still we won

Cocosat2, I live in Blyth so not for from your old stamping ground, probably seen you in the Dominoe at sometime.

The LNB should be OK. Spending loads of money on LNBs is only worthwhile if you're deadly serious and want to wring everything possible out of your setup.

Skew is either clockwise (viewed from front of dish) when going East along the arc or anticlockwise for Western satellites. The further E/W you go, the more skew. When pointing due south, it should be perfectly vertical.

The Lidl LNB seams fine, its a 0.6 and cost £3.99. its almost as good as the 0.2 Inverto I have.
