Default sl65/12 patching problems

Hi all, i've been trying to patch my box but it never gets past the checking serial port stage. How long would that process normally take? The null modem cable i'm using works fine with my fortec so I don't think that is to blame. The box was bought from lidl in april of this year so I have assumed it can be patched. I have found else where some info indicating that any un official patches can only be uploaded using a jtag cable. I do not know what one of these is and found no mention of one in the patching guide on here. Does anybody have an idea where I may be going wrong, or have you experienced similar problems?
Cheers, sat bodger

AFAIR it took a couple of seconds to check the port and then several minutes to update firmware. Have you checked the ALI chip revision? It must be B1...

Truth be told, i haven't lifted the heat sink off the chip to positively id the chip. I was hoping that as the box is less than 6months old the b1 chip would be in there. My box came pre programmed with fta channels and I wondered if that had an effect on the function of the rs232 port, ie could it have been disabled at the manufacturers to prevent any un authorised software being loaded?

Entirely possible but extremely unlikely. You need to check the chip. You could bu99er your receiver if it's not the patchable version. If it isn't, then it simply won't patch - no matter how long you leave it.

Mine patched ok with a null modem cable, how many serial ports does thy have? If it's two or more just switch the cable to the other.

I've read that with the SL65, once you patch it you can only re-patch (or 'un-patch') it via JTAG because the patch disables the serial port. Don't know if that's the same with the 12V version.

Can't confirm or deny this - just what I've read.

I am not so sure about this one, Stick. I patched 65/12 and serial port was still open - that's how I loaded BIN files into it.

It's what I read about the 230V version. I don't know about the 12V. I get most of my info from either Smokie's or Maiden's sites, like everyone else

The 12V box does seem to be better supported, but I should point out to everyone else reading this, that it's not the hot ticket for a patchable box. Don't buy it if that's what you want to do. Buy it because it's cheap, and anything else is a bonus.
