Default Strange Sky EPG behaviour

I am experiencing strange behaviour with the Sky EPG.

My setup is as follows:

Location: Stockholm
Dish: Triax 110cm
LNB: Inverto Universal Quad
Receiver: Pace 2600 C1

I purchased the receiver from eBay, it came with a Sky card.

Got my dish put up yesterday by professional installers, damn good job done. Perfect reception on all 2d horizontals and all 2A/b transponders. The problem I have is that the EPG is behaving strangely. The box has been switched off for ages so I imagine my problems might have something to do with the card's activation state but I would just like to confirm with someone.

OK, here are the symptoms:

When the card is out:
+ EPG doesn't work at all, just gets stuck on "Searching for channels"
+ Can view all FTA channels by entering their channel number directly (where the dish is receiving the transponder)
+ Channel 4 and 5 say "Channel Not Available" when their numbers are entered

When the card is in:
+ EPG shows channels up to 145 only
+ Can view FTA channels under 145 by entering their channel number directly
+ All channels over 145 say "Channel Not Available" when their numbers are entered (including Sky News)
+ Channel 4 gives standard upgrade subscription message
+ Channel 5 works fine

I thought that the EPG should work without the Sky card!

I've done a software upgrade (without the card in).

Sound like an activation problem? Do I need to call Sky to force activation. Before you all SHOUT about calling Sky from overseas I planned to call them from my old UK mobile which still works.

Thanks for your help.

If the box is from ebay, there is a fair chance that the card just needs a good signal to update. It will take a little while but should be ok within 24 hours. A number of channels and the epg have moved around a bit recently and if the box has been off, then it may not have picked up those changes. Although if you updated the software, that should have been corrected.

I assume you updated the software over the air?

Yes, it was an over the air update. I did it with the card out, was that wrong? Should the card be in during the update?

I had something similar but it just cleared itself. Can't remember if I switched on and off to reset or not. Should be OK later I suspect

I updated with the card in and no problems. The card has to be in for it to be re-activated.

If the card is an ex-subscription card then you will get the default area for the BBC and ITV channels. Sky told me they could not change the default area on an ex-sub card as opposed to a ftv card.

Bit of a nuisance as I get 'heathenland' as the defaults. No appologies to our heathen members.

Channel 4 is now activated but despite 2 forced software upgrades the EPG version still shows as 3.2.11 >

Sky digiboxes are a law unto themselves. If it's actually working after a fashion, just leave it on. Eventually it should stop sulking and sort itself out.

You could try a "new installation"

Press services, 4, then pres 0,1 and then select, this will get you into the secret installation menu. Then press 6. when prompted press select. It might help.

I know the feeling Jim. I get STV and BBC Scotland which is a bit of a head f**k when i've had a bit to drink.

The box and card was given to me by my mate who used to live in Aberdeen as part payment for the Installation of his new dish in Paignton. Still the good thing is that the Sky Six Pack subscription will still be on for the next five to six weeks as he forgot to cancel the DD and hes just paid for another months sub for me

Now thats what you call a real mate
