I've recently found that my XP2500 will run mpeg-4 HD glitch-free using CoreAVC 1.2.

Card isnt MPEG2 its just a DVB-S tuner, the PC does all the decoding of video.

There are no DVB viewing applications which support the Skystar HD card and have the correct infrastructure to enable software decryption plugins. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy one soon though just for FTA.

Really? That's good to know. I'm using a 3GHz Core 2 Duo to transcode the MPEG-4 AVC to MPEG-2/WMV (depending on what I need) and it only just keeps up with VLC. I haven't tried CoreAVC for a while, but even back on my old 3.2GHz Pentium 4, it wasn't too amazing. Looks like it's improved!

CPU sits at around 95% but it doesn't drop a frame.

Yes Jonty, you just need the H264 codec. Unfortunately the dvb s2 channels cant be watched, that needs a HD card, but BBC HD is ok on win xp and probably linux. Also some HD channels on 13E and 19.2E. Vista throws its rattle out of the pram, probably because it gobbles up too much cpu time itself.

I'm using Windows Vista without any problems. I've found that HD performance is better on Vista than it is on XP. Likely some kind of updated driver-related coincidence, but... Well, there's something in it!

One thing you can try is making a recording of a HD stream, then playing it back in VLC. You know, just so you can actually SEE something. It's a good feeling to see your first piece of self-captured HD
