The reason I said sour grapes is because even some so called eperts cant tell the difference. DMM issued a note of the differences and they got some of them wrong.

China seem to be able to copy even the scratches on the case. The holograms are supposed to be different but not conclusive.

And I'm sure that whatever Dream do to try and differentiate the boxes, the Chinese will also copy. After a while the waters will become so muddy that nobody will know which is which.

Still interested in the original post though. It does tend to indicate that the DM500 will be reborn as the DM500S-plus. DMM obviously recognise that they're in a losing battle with the current situation.

Methinks that the only way for DM to win is to make piracy unworthy. Make DM400, which is basically the same DM500 but in different casing and sell it for 50 quid or something. I pretty sure that they already returned the R&D investment for DM500 so can afford it. If Technomate can afford to sell TM9100, which is effectively DM600 in tarty looking package (and awful software, but this will improve one day, fingers crossed) for 100 quid retail. then DM should be able to do so as well.
Now if one could by original DM500 for 50 quid and fake one for 30 - which one would you go for?

DMM seem to be getting into 'badge engineering' which wont solve anything. The only thing to stop cloning is quality, reliablity and cost.

the dm 600 has a secure chip inside , as will the 500 plus due shortly.
Secure as in not possible to copy!
Quite how this will manifest itself i dont know..but ill keep you posted when i find out!

Thanks for letting us know anyhow. The clones have got to be bad news for DMM and therefore bad for all Dreambox owners sooner or later.
