If I want a motorised dish do I have to by a "dish and motor set" or can i buy them separately? I can see 85cm dish and motor sets but I cannot see any "sets" for bigger dishes.
1. If i just bought a 1m dish could I plonk it onto of any old USALS motor? 2. Are the fittings specific between motor and dish? 3. Surely there comes a point when the dish is too big for the motor? |

There are 2 ways of motorising a dish. Dish`s one meter and under you can use a disec motor.
Then as dish`s get bigger, they tend to have a polar mount and Jack arm (actuator) They come in different stroke sizes. From 8" up to 36".

I agree. Further, most dishes will fit a DiSEqC/USALS motor, but there are a few combinations that are awkward.

diseqc 1.2/usals motors can be used on up to 1.2m dish, if the install location is very sheltered from wind
depends what you want as ideally a diseqc motor setup is easiest and cheap but cant be used on dishes like channel master or gibertini 1.2m orbital dishes and the cryptik motors look a good combination as the dish bolts directly on to the back of the dish so no moving on the motor pole in windy conditions

I've seen more than one Gibbi 1.25m on a Moteck or the like, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it.
