Hello!
Newbie here. I would like to view news channels from around the world. Maybe this is technically and financially prohibitive? Maybe I should lower my sights and ask what dish and other technical gizmos do I need to access Spanish/ German/ French TV? I had a sat dish back in 1998 mounted on a stake in the garden and used to swivel it round to change sat. I hope to do similar this time. I guess I dont want to buy a sat dish, only to find out I need a bigger one or perhaps didnt need the big one i have bought etc. Kind Regards |

Welcome to the forum mclarco.
When you say around the world, do you literally mean that or just around the European area with news from around the world? It depends upon your loacation but a dish of about 90cm should get pretty well everything you can shake a stick at. I would recommend you motorise your dish to give you maximum flexibility. Your basic requirements are spelt out in several posts so have a read and if its not clear, put up some specific questions.

Yes, I'd like to see the news broadcast by different countries around the world. Language is of course a barrier. I suppose at this level my questioning is about the technical feasibility and expense. Also are there government restrictions/ censorship on certain countries/ areas of the world maybe?
Assuming that the above poses too much of a barrier, then I'd like to pick up all things European. From what you say a 90cm dish should suffice. Motorising makes sense. Yes, I've been reading around newbie posts and have picked up much thank you. Rgds mclarko |

I think that what Jim is getting at, is that yes, with a 90cm dish you can get local and international news from predominantly European countries. You can't get very much at all from countries outside of Europe.
This is because they broadcast via satellites that are literally below the horizon in the UK. There are several notable exceptions of course, but that's the basic premise. If that suits your needs, then I'd go with Jim's recommendation. You don't need to think much more about it. Now you need to think carefully about your receiver. A far more challenging conundrum ![]()

You can get Chinese news channel (CCTV9) on 13.0E. Also there is Russia Today and Caspionet (Kazakstan?) and Nile TV (Egypt I think).
All these are broadcasting in English. FTA. |

Yes its on Hotbird.
Have a look at this page: http://www.flysat.com/hotbird.php Green are scrambled, pale blue are clear. I have a digital site : www.digitalsat.co.uk which ONLY lists the clear stuff. Some of the charts are a bit out of date, but will give you an idea of whats available Hotbird 13E is by far the best satellite cluster for international channels Despite my user name, analogue is just about dead now, (www.analoguesat.co.uk will give you details of whats still going! ) If you can pick up some free or very cheap analogue kit then its a good place to learn about channels, reception etc - it where I started 7 years ago but analogue has just about had its day
