Default Hollywood declares sides in DVD format war

Hollywood studios Paramount and DreamWorks Animation have declared their exclusive support for the Toshiba-backed HD-DVD format for next-generation DVDs. The move coincides with the announcement by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment that it would release 29 new movie titles using Sony's rival backed Blu-ray format.

Paramount, owned by US media giant Viacom, and DreamWorks said their exclusive support for the HD-DVD format would be on a worldwide basis. "The exclusive HD-DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment," said the companies in a statement.

The decision to back the HD-DVD format was based on "the clear benefits of HD-DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs", the companies added.

Meanwhile, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment said its decision to back Blu-ray was due to its sales lead in the US market. "Blu-ray Disc is the number one selling high-definition packaged media. In fact, on a worldwide basis, Blu-ray Disc is averaging nearly 70% market-share per week of all high definition titles sold this year and, in the US, it is out-performing HD DVD by a margin of 115%," said Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

I don't see the sense in any of this. They know full well that one of the formats is going to lose, taking a huge chunk of their cash with them. Imo, it would have been more logical to get together and create one super-standard?

I know that the winning format will gain a lot of revenue from it, but still - they are also in the position to lose billions from it.

Yeah, it's turned into a huge game of 'chicken'.

Do you think that dual-format players will plug the gap?

Thing is, unlike the days of Betamax vs VHS, this technology wont be around for 25+ years, though financially it's probably a bigger deal.
