Is this one decent enough for a starter dish - is it possible to motorise it at a later date? I tkae it I will need to buy f an k brackets to pole mount it?

Worth a fiver, but not much more. It's old, and it would almost certainly benefit from a new LNB.
T&K are good, but you might get away with the 'L' bracket if it's a strong one and it's not going in a windy location. T&K is the way to go for motorised, as it gives you the adjustment you require. A fixed dish doesn't need this. And yes, you could motorise this dish - but if that's an upgrade path for you, do yourself a favour and install T&K now.

You may have problems motorising that one. The dish needs to mount onto a vertical pole. From the photo, you can't see what the back of the dish looks like. I suspect that it mounts on a horizontal pole, with the elevation beong adjusted by swiveling around it. If you did manage to mount it somehow onto that pole in the picture, unecessary strain may be put onto the motor. For use on a fixed sat though, that dish will give you plenty of rain margin for the stronger sats. Personally I would go up to a tenner if I didn't have to pay any postage on it. You can pick up a brand new 80cm to 90cm dish for £30 to £40. |

I.m finding it hard making my mind up whether to get a dish and motorise it or go for one with multi lnbs , maybe I don't quite understand the pros and cons of each setup. Which would it be cheapest to implement?
At the moment the Raven gemini dish with multilnb holder is catching my eye coming in at £43 but obviously with lnbs on top of that. What price am I looking at for a decent lnb? |

The more the better is the answer to that one, but you could do OK at a fiver each. £10 each will get you a nice branded model and £20 will get you excellent products. Clearly if you're buying several, it makes sense to try and keep the cost down a bit.
Did you read this? http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...pic,365.0.html The Raven is an excellent choice, and you won't be disappointed with it until you miss something really cool on a satellite you can't get. Having said that, it's far nicer to actually use than a motor if you spend all your time watching TV on three or four sats.

you could get a triax 88cm dish from wizardsatellite for 39 quid as that comes with a free lnb and sat finder and would be a good starter dish as they easily fit on a motor or can be expanded with the multi lnb bracket to receiver hotbird, astra 1, astra 2 etc

Yes indeed. I use the larger version of this setup and get 19.2E 13E 7E and 1W.

The disadvantage is, if you like to "satellite hop" you have to wait a little while, while the motor works its way round (slowish for Diseqc motors). The advantage of a multi LNB setup is that there is no waiting. For a budget system, the cost of the two is similar, for 2-3 sats. The best option is to get one of each; Motorised for flexibility, and a fixed dish for your most popular sats. (or is that just plain GREEDY. : ) |
