Default sharing satellite tv

My dad has a motorised dish that he uses to watch turkish tv channels.

What is the best way to share this from a bedroom.

note: The dish is right outside and above my bedroom window

The cheapest way would be to run some coax from the receiver rf out and plug it into your tv.
Or you could also use a video sender.

Either way you would have to watch whatever was on the existing receiver, possibly controlled by a remote extender.

A better way would be to get your own satellite receiver and subscription ( or whatever he uses, possibly a wireless cam so you can share).
and a Twin LNB.
But you would not be able to move the dish, unless you disconected his from the motor. So both receivers would have to get their signals from the same satellite.

The best way is to get your own dish, receiver, etc, and could still share using a wireless cam. That way, if the motorised dish got moved, it would not affect you.

Could i use a pci card satellite reciever for a PC?

How would I connect this to the dish?

What is the reason for Twin LNB's?

If you have two receivers then you effectively need two LNBs.
The twin LNB is effectively two lnbs in one.

The reason for a twin LNB is that:-

The standard universal LNB covers two frequency bands; a low and a high one.
The signals can also be either horizontally or vertically polarised.

The receiver selects which band and what polarisation it wants by sending a 22kHz tone and a higher supply voltage to the LNB.
The signals from a satellite will be at a range of frequencies in the high and low band and the polarisation is used to reduce
cross channel interference for adjacent frequencies.

Bottom line is, if one reciever has selected one band and polarisation, the other receiver (if a simple spltter was used) would
be fighting with it.

To connect another receiver such as a satellite PC card, you would simply replace the LNB with a twin LNB ( if it isn't already)
or a quad LNB ( if both o/ps of twin already used), and connect to a spare output with a new coax c@able. (satellite qulaity)

Yes a satellite PC card can be used as a satellite receiver.
I don't know what packages you are after or if its just FTA.
The FTA will work no problem.
If you're after an encrypted package, it would depend on how you wanted to decrypt it.
I know nothing about Satellite PC cards apart from theres one called Skystar II, seen it mentioned a lot, and there's a section on this forum for it. I imagine that its possible to put CAMs in, such as the diablo or TRex, but I have'nt got a clue on that, just guessing.

Thanks for the info robbo71

I think I don't really want to be messing around with my dad's dish(it's quite big and motorised)

I have an old sky dish (it's quite small) that we never use mounted at the front of the house, could I recieve the turkish channels with this connected to the skystar 2 Reciever or will I need a larger dish?

Looking on the lyngsat website most of the channels are FTA on Turksat 1C:

Hi,
Theres a chance you might.
I think I got some of the channels on there with my Zone1 minishdish ( the little one).
I don't know where you are located.
If you are down south, then worth giving it a try,
Just wack the dish left a bit and down a little bit. ( looking from behind).
( I meant very slowly move it really)

If you get your Dad to go to that satellite with his receiver, switch it off, then plug the minidish in,
switch the rec back on,
and see if you can adjust the dish to get any of the (1C) channels he was getting on the big dish.

( Coax cables from Rec to LNB must not be uplugged with receiver on as damage can be caused if unlucky)

I'll check later tonight to see what I was picking up.

I've connected the minidish to the reciever, but get no signal.

Can you give me any advice on how to align the dish.

My dad says the Lnb is faulty, is there a way to prove this?

Where the cable is connected to the Lnb it can be moved to 3 different positions, what is this for?

I assume that you are talking about your dads receiver, and a minidish aligned to 28.2E.
In which case you need to select say BBC1 or ITV on the receiver ( so that 28.2E sat) is selected,
and see if you get a signal then.

If it's at another known satellite, then pick a channel on that instead.

If you don't get a signal,it could either be that the LNB is faulty (highly likely as that's what you have been told) or the c@ble is not connected properly or is faulty (eg water damage or connectors not put on properly).

Relacement LNBs for the _SKy minidish can be picked up very cheaply, and the only easy way to test an
LNB is to try it on a known aligned dish and ensure you can pick the channels for that sat. Or alernatively, replace the LNB and see if that works.

The 3 different positions are so that the skew of the LNB can be adjusted.
The positions are different angular rotatations of the LNB.
Just leave it in the middle position to start with, and then move it to find maximum signal once setup.

Simply, aligning the dish is just a matter of gradually moving the dish until you get maximum signal quality. Either a sat finder meter can be used (<£10 for a cheapo) or if it has it, the signal meter on the receiver.

For alignment, I use a combination of satellite meter and the receiver for identification:-
Assuming the dish was on 28.2E already, you will need to gradually move the dish eastward until you get
a peak in the signal level on the meter, and then adjust the dish elevation for the same. Then use the receiver to find out what satellite it is. A list of all the channels on each sat is here http://www.lyngsat.com
If it's the wrong sat, repeat the process for the next peak that you find, as you move eastward. The more eastward you go, the lower the dish elevation needs to be ( assuming you are in the UK and the dish was originally on 28.2E)

Once you get a new LNB if you need it, and possibly a cheap satellite meter, further help can be given if required.
