Default Pulling my hair out

Hi, im a newbite to satalite, some time ago I bought one of these kits: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PORTABLE-SATEL...QQcmdZViewItem

I never got it working and gave up, the past few days I have started giveing it a go instead of being lumbered with a big paper weight!, I connect all the system up I direct the dish at all differnt places yet the signal stays at 29-30% all the time, why can't it tell me where they are?, you can only select one satelite at a time I've pointed it everywhere yet I never see a picture on the TV.

I bought one of them satelite finders and tried it out today even that didnt find anything! AHHhhhhh!.

Should it atleast be going a bit up from 29%?.

Hi,

Yes assuming that you have everything connected up properly, you should be able to get acceptable signal quality readings.
With a dish it is no good to just point it at different places and expect to get a signal.
It has to be carefully aligned on the satellite that you want to pick up signals from.

The satellites appear as an an arc in the sky like this:
http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...ic,1353.0.html

It's just a matter of very careful adjustment of the elevation and azimuth of the dish to maximise the signal from your chosen sat.

Knowing which way is south is your first objective.
Then place the dish so it is pointing up by about 25-30 degrees (vertical dish if its an offset dish)
After that, slowily swinging your dish the correct way left or right for the sat you want and careful adjustment of the dish elevation should enable you to find at least one satellite.

Once you have found one, its easier to find any others, based on the arc.

Which satellite are you trying to get?

Thanks, well my box (silvercrest) has load sof satelites on it and you have to choose one by one, really annoying as I dont know where they are so im just selecting one then pointing it south then onto the next one, i'm in London UK and all the satelites are pointing south so I just presumed that it was the way to point it!.

Maybe it's my coax wire?, one end has a longer bit of metal coming out of it then the other, maybe that isnt connecting to the box?. It screws it ok.

Hi Ellis567

Look here to see how to fit the F connectors to either end of the coax.

Just try to get one satellite for now - I'd say that Astra 1 (which lives at 19.2 east) is the easiest to find - you can pick that signal up on a dustbin lid! This page should be of use to you when working out where to point your dish:

_http://www.u k satellite help.co.uk/2007/08/12/satellite-alignment-calculator-v2/
(remove the spaces)

I always take a 3 step method to aligning a satellite dish:

1. Connect your satellite meter up, and turn the knob until it starts making a faint noise and one of the LEDs light up. Make sure the receiver is plugged in and turned on, or the meter won't work!
2. Correctly set the "elevation" on the dish (you can find the elevation for your area using the link above)
3. Slowly move the dish into the position indicated by the link above until your meter goes wild!

Once your meter is happy, run inside and do a scan - with any luck, you'll be watching satellite TV in no time

Three lies on that _ebay listing though.

1. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO PURCHASE THIS MUST HAVE ITEM

2. THIS SYSTEM ALLOWS YOU RECIEVE ALL YOUR FAVOURITE CHANNELS AND PROGRAMMES WHILST ON THE MOVE.
( no it will only work while stationary)

3. YOU NAME IT YOU CAN DO IT.
(Can't get Channel 4 or 5 or any encryted channels)

4.ALL IN ALL AN AMAZING PIECE OF KIT.
( Not really, I'm sure Yorks will agree , Argghhhhhhhhhhh!)

ROFLMAO!

You may laugh, but when the forum software is first installed, it comes with no words censored at all, and it's surprisingly hard to brain-dump all the filth you've learned since you were a kid into the word-censor!

I didn't want to interrupt my flow, so I typed fast and reviewed later. Sometimes it comes back to haunt me

I've fixed that particular oversight now.

Hooray! Looks like we're getting closer!

LNB skew is the amount you should "skew" the LNB by - that is, twist it a bit either left or right. To be honest, with Astra 1, the signal is so strong that you can just leave the LNB in the middle. LNB skew is very useful when trying to maximize a weak signal.
