Default dish on top of the ordinary car, etc

I found this on the net, basically fix it to the rack mount and off you go. car can move no probs. note that it's working position of the dish. not quite sure how, but imagine possibilities : who said it has to sit on the car?

do you know how it works? is it one of the local terrestial transmissions, or something similar to sirius radio? will it work anywhere as a sat dish? ...? ...?

No idea. The 'mobile' dishes I've seen for caravans etc. open up like a standard dish and often 'self-home'.

They're very expensive.

It's a TracVision! It adjusts its elevation and such as you drive around! Popular in America, which generally means they're rubbish.

the dishes operate in such a wavelength that it makes it close to the optics. dish is similar to the optical mirror lens used in some telescopes. as such there were many techniques designed to focus the beam. the beam in the signal industry is one dimensional, i.e. don't care about the picture as long as i can focus my blob of light. in that case the lens doesn't have to bulge anymore, large focussing 'lenses' then become possible, check out lens of Fresnel used in train semaphores light houses and very old traffic lights http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_lens

same with the sat signal, the dish doesn't have to reflect, doesn't have to be round, doesn't have to stand up, inf fact doesn't have to be at all for example in the pic attached this is the alternative to zone 1 dish in UK, for about a 100 quid you can point it up, or shell I say sideways and get your daily fix of TV.

it may well be that the funny shape of that round thing manages to focus enough signal from any direction 360.

If I remember correctly those sort of "dishes" got terrible reviews on Dr Dish

well yes, they are designed with different reason in mind. but who cares if you cannot receive other sats on your zone 1 dish, they do what they are supposed to do and they are nice and small. with regard to the dish on the roof rack, think about this kinda thing on your house roof...a bigger size... no need for motor, can get all your sats...
