Default West satellite for dish alignment.

I will be installing my new motorized dish in a few days.

The back of my house, where dish will be installed above the gutter, faces east (gutter runs 16 degrees east of south).

I calculate that the dish will just about see Hispasat30W but it may have the signal attenuated by the roof ridge; this would make aligning a little hit and miss.

Suggestions, please, for a suitable satellite (and transponder) at about 20W that I can use instead.

TIA

baj, you dont use the satellites other than direct south of your location to set up a motorised system. Once you have set up on the southern satellite, you just need to slightly tweak the dish for the best reception on all satellites.

If you have actually got the system set up and only want to scan a satellite on the western extreme, than try 18 west 11659 H 2170.

If you can get 30 west then try 11811 V 27500 TV Galicia

Why are you not going to use the satellite nearest to your due south for alignment?
What is your longitude?

would have thought you'd align the dish up on thor 1west first then check each end of the arc and tweak if necessary

Once you've set up to the best of your ability on your due-south satellite, then you can start playing with satellites at the extreme ends of your visible arc to fine tune. The theory usually doesn't quite match the reality, so a few small adjustments have to be made.

This may be what you meant in the first place, but just to confirm

We have a fine-tuning guide here:

Oh dear,

I should have written "this would make tweaking the alignment a little hit and miss" and not "this would make aligning a little hit and miss". This as obviously caused confusion. Of course I will set the polar elevation angle, declination angle, elevation angle (allowing for dish offset) and the motor to 2.7 degrees west (I have counted the pulses for my Jaeger 99 motor and V-box - 3.07 pulses per degree) and then find Thor1W and so on.

But next it will be necessary to tweak W and E because one can maximize the signal from Thor1W by having both the dish elevation and motor polar angle slightly wrong, with one error compensating for the other.

So apologies for not making myself clear, and thanks for your comments - I'll try 18W.

I thought that might be the case...
