Still trying to pluck up courage to try this as I believe it invalidates the guarantee - has anyone had any problems?

Not unless you're completely cavalier in your approach. It's a little intimidating until you've done it once, but it's really very simple.
Isn't your box a year old yet? Definitely worth doing. No question.

The box is a 1000D Super and it's two months old. I may try it sometime but will need to obtain the c@ble first. I have managed to download the patch to my computer so far but there seemed to be two - one was 1.8.7, I think, and the other seemed to be something else. Do you have the box switched on or off when patching and do you have it selected for a particular satellite?

The box has to be on when patching mate, as in powered on, but it can be in standby mode. Make sure you backup your current channel list though as if it does go tits up you wont have to spend hours and hours searching for all those sats/channels. |

Still studying the techniques - as my computer is in another room from the Technomate, and if I bring the Techno to the computer, does it need to connected to the dish or could I tune it into a spare TV to see the results on screen - silly question I know but it's quite a job to disconnect either as the TV is a 28 inch job and heavy!!

It can be connected to a different TV (not connected to dish) ---- just for On Screen Display.
