Can anyone explain what use the serial port is on this receiver?
The manual makes little reference to it and I just wondered whether it was possible to update the beast via this port and would like to hear from anyone that has actually used it. Thanks

I used to have a 3000 but never used the serial port. All updating is available via satellite. Key etc are updated via cards/cams.

The OTA updates for the 3000 ceased about 3 years ago. The only way to update it now is via the serial port.

So how is that achieved then? eg, what is the source data to place on the PC and how does it 'connect' to the 3600?

You grab the loader software and firmware off the Echstar site, connect the receiver to the computer with a serial cable. Then run the loader and transfer the file over to the receiver.
Sounds complicated, but is actually dead easy.

Be aware if the flash goes wrong you will probably wreck the receiver beyond any reasonable chance of salvaging it.
Echostar stopped updating the software for their older receivers quite a while back so dont expect anything very recent. Version 800 is the most recent for the 3600

For the echostar 3600 the 1000 is the last stable software update, although they did do a beta 1100 software but this had a few bugs in it.
If your Echostar is already running the 1000 software I advise you stay with that. You can find this out by going into the menu, click on the Hammer symbol, and then scroll to the second page where you will find a symbol representing About Echostar. Look down to the EchoNAV listing and if it has 3.04-v1000 then it is running the best software. If not you can download the software from echostareurope.com just click on the Support tab, on the left you will see Downloads, STB Software, here you will see a list of receivers, click on Receiver: AD-3600 IP Viaccess© and second from the bottom you will see the 1000 software. |

Oh yes so it is - I missed the v1000 software as its right down at the bottom of the list between v100 and v200!

I have done that myself, on databases, forget to put leading 0's in the numbers to keep them in the correct order, it does cause a mess when you come to sort the numbers, to compile records !!!!!!!!!!!
