PVR = Personal Video Recorder

It means it has (or can be fitted with) a hard drive for recording purposes

Does the one you're looking at come with a hard drive already fitted? As the one I've just looked at just says "PVR ready", which I would guess means you've got to add you're own

The Manhattan looks like a nice receiver, and has it's own 36v output if you ever went down that route.

It wouldn't be my first choice though, at the thick end of £200 it's a bit pricey, and if you're wanting something 'patchable' then it doesn't have the same support as other, much cheaper models

It depends what you want from you're STB:

Do you need a built in 36V positioner? If you're fitting a standard DiSEqC motor then you don't need 36V output.

Do you think you will add a hard drive in the future? Do you need it to be PVR ready?

Is their anything special that the Manhattan does that something like the Technomate 1*** series can't do, apart from the 36v output and the PVR?

Have a look at the link below and compare that with the Manhattan. This is probably the most popular beginners STB, have a look at the 1000 & 1500 as these are the most popular:

The Dreamboxes (Linux based), and Vantage receivers also come highly recommended. The cheapest Dreambox is probably around £150 for the DM500, while the Vantage receivers are around £100 upwards.

Have you considered any other receivers gbutch?

Been told that you need 36v for a 1.0 dish (live in the northeast) did look at Phoenix but couldn't see anybody talking about them

Hi G B,
With the 36V motors/actuators it is not necessary to buy a receiver with a 36V capability.
This is because you can buy a box a called a V-box that will convert the DiSEqC signals generated by a standard receiver to those needed to control a 36V motor. I believe they're made by various companies including Technomate and Moteck. I've seen them from about £35.

This may allow you to get the best of both worlds.

According to the motor specs some of the Diseqc motors will go upto 1.2m theoretically, but in practice people tend to go for something more robust. Good thing about the Diseqc motors is that they're dirt cheap, and you can normally use USALS which can make life a bit easier for the beginner.

If PVR is a must, then for 150 quid you can get TM9100, which is essentially DM600 cheaper clone. Software isn't that good though.

You can just get away with a 1m dish on a basic DISEqC H-H motor

If you go down the 36v route then I would definitely use a 'V' box, as opposed to a built in 36v positioner. This way gives you far more receiver options

I use a 'V' box & 36v motor myself & it was easy enough to set up

Which motor/dish is that with gbutch?

On the face of it £240 doesn't sound to bad for a 36v motorised kit with dish, motor, v box and receiver, especially as Sat Superstore are usually a tad on the expensive side
