Default AU - how does it work?

I've seen that auto update of keys is possible on quite a few patched receivers, but if the receiver isn't connected to the internet, how does it get the updates - not over the air, surely?

I think its some thing to do with the emms (coded information :?) that are sent over the air. Basically I'm guessing that a patched receiver just mimics a receiver with a card using the info sent over the air which would normally be interpreted by an official card/receiver combo

Or something like that :?
