Default Video recorders are illegal in Germany

Germany's upper house of parliament on Friday approved a controversial copyright law, which makes it all but illegal for individuals to make copies of films and music, even for their own use.

The Bundesrat pushed aside criticism from consumer protection groups and passed the law, which makes it illegal for anyone to store DVDs and CDs without permission. The law also covers digital copies from IPTV and TV broadcasts.

Consumer groups and the Green Party had campaigned in vain to include an exemption, so that the measure would not criminalize youths and other private users. The law is set to take effect in 2008.

The law goes beyond previous legislation brought in by the government to help the entertainment industry. Germany's federal justice minister Brigitte Zypris claimed that the legislative reform brought Germany into line with European Union codes.

Is this true or just scaremongering?

If it is law here then sky are in for a shock because all their pvr receivers will be illegal. Yet another unworkable law.

RocketMBA

Cassettes are safe unless you're one of the few who bought DAT back then. The law is about digital recording.

Jimdefruit

I guess by "recording" they mean something you can have for a prolonged period of time or indefinitely. Like if you copy video from your dreambox and make DVD off it.

I have just read an article on boingboing.net where they are saying that it's not illegal at all, the story has just been mis-reported.

Nah. It's unworkable if it's true.

The bit about analogue and digital is daft as well if it's correct, because people will just convert everything to analogue and stop the German digitalisation program dead in it's tracks!

I wonder how many brown envelopes were slipped to the "Honourable Members" to get it passed? A few thousand here and there would be nothing from the treasure chests of those that it will benefit. But it has always been illegal I thought. Just a thought.
