Councils across Britain are planning to charge up to £350 a year to let employees park at work instead of introducing congestion charge zones.
The scheme, which is being pioneered by Nottingham City Council, is being considered by eight councils in total, because it is said to be cheaper and easier to administer than congestion charge zones. Estimates suggest it would cost 10% of the amount levied to administer, in contrast to London's congestion charge, which costs 40% of the money levied. Under the Nottinghamshire initiative, which is known as the Workplace Parking Levy (WPL), employers with more than 10 parking spaces will have to pay the tax, which can then be passed on to staff. It is hoped staff will opt to use public transport rather than drive to work as a result, and that the money raised will pay for two more tram lines in the city.. Nottinghamshire council is holding a five-day consultation on its proposals from October 1. If passed, WPL will be introduced in 2010 at a charge of £185 per space, which would rise to £350 by 2014. Subsequent increases would be pegged to inflation. Estimates suggest businesses will remove 10% of parking spaces as a result, removing 4000 vehicles from the roads at the busiest times. The proposals have already come in for criticism from the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce on the grounds it may drive employers out of the city. http://www.whatcar.co.uk/news-article.aspx?NA=228219 |

That and the fact they think they are entitled to take up as much room as a car without paying any road tax..

Cyclists are perfectly entitled to take up a reasonable amount of room - the highway code states car drivers should give other road users adequate space. Which means moving far enough over when passing that the inside wing mirrors dont hit the cyclist....
Cyclist have to protect themselves coz its damn certain (most) drivers wont, therefore move aout a bit and make them slow down to pass. Basic safety sense.

Well I would hope that Nottingham City Council will also charge their Councillors and officials who make these silly rules for parking at their City Chambers and inflict the same punitive conditions on their own people as they would seek to impose on everyone else - it's a disgrace!!! It will only be a matter of time before all the left wing loony councils all over Britain see yet another easy way of screwing money out of anything that moves.

If it's too dangerous for the old bill it should be too dangerous for joe public! While we're at it could we get rid of lorries, caravans, motorbikes, buses, coaches, oap drivers, foreign drivers, anyone who drives at less than speed limit, lost drivers, tractors, trailers, roundabouts, traffic lights, speed cameras, roadworks and just about anyone else who happens to be on the road at the same time as me! Taa
![]() On a more serious note, that matey who got done for driving at 172mph in a Porsche on an A road only got 10 weeks inside & a 3 year ban. It wasn't his car, he did not have permission to be driving it and he admitted dangerous driving, (for which the judge commended him). At that speed, even in that car, it would have taken him 500m to stop. ****.
