Default Which Linux

Good morning all,
Just want to ask all you who use Linux which version I should get to get me started? I am afraid that my only experience of programing was the old Sinclare 128 and some on the old BBC computers, so I would like to have a go at this Linux, before I get too old and decrepit.

Tanks for the replies I know I shall receive from you.

Just realised that I have posted in the wrong place, sorry for that. I shall not post this to any other place, as I am very sure that some very kind Mod will shift it and I do not want to duel post, sorry again for any inconvienence.

Very best regards Wez

You were right, the kindest of all moved it for you --- Stick.

I have tried several versions of linux and keep going back to ubuntu. You can download it as a live cd but that would take weeks on your slow connection. If you log onto the ubuntu website you can get a cd. I would send you a copy if you have amd64.

I haven't used Linux extensively for a while, but there are many free programming tools and suites available for Windows if you can't get Linux up and running. Just throwing it out there

Suse, Ubuntu and Fedora are all good for general use, or you could try Knoppix which runs off the CD and doesn't even need to be installed!

If you'd like to play with an HTPC/mediacentre-type version, then GeeXboX would be a good choice.

There are some tiny distros, (like just a few MB) which you could download. Check a list here:

Thank you all lads. I can got to the computer shop and use their wireless connection for a few € per hour so I would be able to download it there. I suppose whichever is the best for use with Dreambox would be what I would be after, but if it is too difficult for a beginner then whichever would be the simplest. I have had a look at sites for Linux and I think, fro what I have read, I would be best to try it from a CD first, just to see who I get on with it, then if I find it not too daunting, I could get the version that installs on my HDD.

As usual the response has been great and I would like to thank you all for your help.

Good luck and best wishes Wez

Hi wez, you dont need linux to work with the dreambox unless you are thinking of doing any coding and image writing. All of the bits you play with are script files which can be manipulated and written using windoze progs.

The three programmes I use are Flashfxp, FlashWizard and a dos window for telnet. You can actually see all the file structures in the dreambox using Flashfxp. The other one you can use is cutefxp and there may well be others.

If you want to work without seeing what you are doing then you can use Dreambox Control Centre or one of the other dreambox windoze programmes.

Thanks Jim, was just wanting to see if I could do something with Linux, for the hell of it. I would like to be able to rite some wee progs for my own use and amusement. I am getting on in years and would like to try it before I get too old and senile.

Thanks and best wishes Wez

I just started to play with Linux on my PC Found easy (so far) way to do so without killing my Windows OS.

1. Download VMWare Player (it is free) from their website: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
2. Download Virtual Appliance (no, not the fridge - that's the way they call it). I am using fedora-7-i386 one (1GB free download).
3. Install VMWare and open (unpack it first) fedora file in it.
4. Enjoy freshly installed Linux on your PC from within Windows.

If you are going to your comp dealer to download, I suggest you download a copy of ImgBurn which is a great free programme to burn image files to CD/DVD. I find it far better than Nero or Windoze for burning images.

Download a copy of the ubuntu image file and burn the image to cd. The latest ubuntu 7.04 is working very well.

You can run ubuntu from the cd to try it out although you obviously cant save settings and updates until you install the programme proper.
