Default noob questions

I have just moved into a new flat that has a small black sat dish installed (sky I assume) it has 2 coax cables running into the sitting room.

Would I be able to hook up a cheap receiver to see what sats I can connect to, can anyone suggest on? Complete noob but very interested in getting into this, so any help would be great.

Hi Dan,

Welcome to the forum.

If it is a Sky dish then it's 99.99% likely that it's pointing at 28.2E/28.5E.
(someone might have moved it though)

And therefore you can only pick up one satellite on it unless you move it.

But you would be able to hook up a a cheap receiver to see what channels you could receive on it.

You could also click here:- http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html

Just the ones with a 'F' in the encryption column I'm afraid on a standard satellite receiver.
i.e the 'Free to Air' (FTA) ones.

As a complete noob I'd go for the Technomate TM1000D, but I'm biased, cos that's what I have.

Alternatively, a TM5200 USB :-

Yes, to get the greatest choice a motor is best. But to make the best use of it, you'd need a bigger dish.
Is it the small minidish that's there.?

Also a subscription of some sort too, possibly the DigitalB sports package ( plus a receiver system able to decrypt Conax)- http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/digitalb.html

I believe there are many other options too, but not a football fan myself so can't advise further.

Welcome to the forum Dan!

You can either buy a subscription card, or just play around with what's 'open' at the moment. If you were to swing the dish around to 19.2E (even a minidish!) and bought a cheap patchable receiver, you can watch loads at the moment, including films, footy and porn.

The only important thing in life that doesn't come out of the sky in 1's and 0's is beer

Dan

That was a quick read up!
You want to make sure the 'support' is available before rushing in, or you'll just be watching a black screen if its not FTA.

And Stick is right, I can get most of 42E, all 19.2E and 13E on my err um motorised minidish, it loses signal when it really really really chucks down though. (98% of the time it's fine).

When moving the dish from 28E to 19E I found that it was possible to get a signal just by swinging the dish round on the azimth ( to the right, from behind). To maximise the signal a careful tweak upwards did the job.
