Hi guys
After falling out with Sky I have decided not to bow to the dark overlord known as Sky Corp anymore. Basically I know nothing about satellite tv other than where the card goes and how to turn it on but after spending a couple of hours looking through this excellent forum I think I am starting to get the drift. Please correct me if I am wrong? First I need to buy a system motorised would be best. Once I have installed it I need to download an installer app and patch it with the relevant sw patch, now I can download keys for use with a cam to decrypt signals. Hope I have got this right so far but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. Now for the questions Q1 I am totally bewildered by the amount of different boxes on the market, I can only assume that certain boxes are more favourable than others and are used by the community because patches are easily available and regularly updated, so which is best? Q2 From the threads I have read on this forum I think I want a system with one remote that controls box and motor for dish, what would be the best system for this? I will be using a 42" hd Plasma and want to get as many channels as possible. Q3 I have been looking at the pace hd receiver I see it has dropped in price down to £99 but can't seem to find any info relating to patches, would this be the wrong box to buy? If someone has a system in mind that may be suitable for a newb like me can you also give me an indication of target price so I don't end up paying over the odds. Thanks Dave PS. I would just like to say I am a member of many different forums and I find this the most friendly and informative, well done and keep up the good work! |

Hi Deadshot,
Welcome to the forum. Glad you like it. Yes we try to make it as friendly and informative as possible. Especially for beginners. Yes, motorised will give you the greatest choice of channels/satellites. The only drawback is that you have to wait a shortwhile for the motor to move. If you only wanted say 3 (or at a push 4) satellites, a multi LNB setup is another option. ( I have both )Yes there are a number of boxes on the market. Personally I reccommend the Technomate TM1xxx series for the reasons you have mentioned.( Not Hi Def though) ( others will no doubt reccomend others )The most simplest system for motorizing a dish up to 1m ish is a Diseqc 1.2 motor such as the Moteck SG2100. The control signals are sent up the coax c@ble, and the dish moves automatically when you change channel. The site sponsor is doing a deal on a system at the moment that might interest you, it includes a TM5200, which is based on the TM1xxx series as far as I know. http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...ic,7628.0.html The L wall mount supplied with it is not recommended, but the rest looks good, for £140 ish. Re: "The control signals are sent up the coax c@ble, and the dish moves automatically when you change channel."
Is this the same coax from the LNB or does it need a 2nd coax run to the motor? |

DiSEqC 1.2 & 36V. With DiSEqC, yes, the same coax that goes to the LNB controls the motor. In fact, the coax comes out of the receiver to the motor, then out of the motor to the LNB. The 36V motors are more powerful, tougher and faster, can take bigger dishes, but are a lot more expensive. They also need a separate multcore motor control c@ble plus a receiver with 36V capability or an external adapter box. A good Diseqc motor can be picked up for £40-£45 ( Moteck sg2100, and its clones) Robbo |

Other than what has been said already, I'll say that on the HD front, I don't know of any patchable boxes, though the Technomates are the most likely units to get the treatment I guess. Most people thus far have gone for the Humax or the Topfield and used a Diablo CAM. Unfortunately, the reason the Pace is as cheap as it is, is that it doesn't work with the T-Rex or Diablo CAMs due to firmware problems. I don't think that has been addressed yet (after a year or more) but I'd be happy for someone to put me straight on that. I think the first decision you need to make after whether to motorise or not, is whether to go HD yet or not. STICK

Hi again,
I wouldn't bother with the CAM etc right now, it is not really needed at the moment. Have a look at this thread started by buffy, I think most of the info you need is in there. http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...ic,7225.0.html And let us know if you get problems with setting up the motor etc Robbo |
