Research by media analyst Attentional into the viewing habits of Sky+ subscribers suggests owners of digital TV recorders watch less television.
According to conventional wisdom, viewers with Sky+ watch more television than they did before owning a digital TV recorder. Attentional says peoplemeters used by viewing measurement panels show they actually watch less TV, but that is due to the fact that Sky+ subscribers include a high proportion of ABC1s. "Sky+ users are lighter viewers than the average Sky viewer, they tend to be relatively prosperous and such people simply watch less TV," said Adrian Edwards, Attentional's head of operations. Attentional's research found there are only slight differences in the content Sky+ viewers watch relative to their non-Sky+ peers. Sky+ viewers watch more factual entertainment and a little less drama. Last year a consortium comprising research group ACB, London Business School, media agency Initiative, Ofcom, ITV, Channel 4 and Five, found that contrary to anecdotal evidence, most television viewing in UK homes with digital TV recorders was still live and viewers still responded to TV ads. There you go. Compelling evidence that smart people don't watch TV. Or something like that.

I'd say it was rich people who don't watch TV. Reading over the post, it seems that Adrian Edwards does too. While I can't say I'm rich, I can say that I'm a lot more picky about what TV I watch now, yet at the same time I'm willing to watch more rubbish if it's got an interesting name. You can record something that sounds a bit rubbish and check it out when you're bored stiff, but most of the time I end up deleting the rubbish and just watching Neighbours.

Isn't smart the same as rich?

Very true.
If you have Sky, then you should get Sky+. If you don't know what we mean, you're not an ABC1. Shame on you for not conforming to a predetermined profile. Sky+ does not carry the additional premium it used to. Get a PVR Sky+ box, then give Sky a bell to re-pair your existing card ![]()
