Hi Folks,
This is my first post & got a question for you gurus outhere:I recently moved to a new flat in West Norfolk (King's lynn) and found a Sky dish ouside it... former tenants did not take it away... ![]() Now, I'd like watch on my PC satelitte program from HOT BIRD 6 - parameters: orbital position 13 EAST; total bit rate 3.000 Mbps; modulation QPSK; FEC 3/4; reed solomon RS (204/188); symbol rate 27.5 Msybols/s; downlink freq 11585 Mhz; polarisation V . (BTW, I am an absolute newbie , so haven't got a clue what the above numbers mean...)So ppl, what do I need to have? ...I have a PC and the mentioned Sky small dish... -Do I need to buy another dish, and if so - which do you reccommend? :? -Do I need a special PC card (I've got PCI-Express 256MB installled on my PC) :? Needless to say... I am on a budget , so be gentle with the price reccommendations ![]() Many thanks for your reply ![]() |

Hi :welc3: to the forum makarije,
I'm a bit confused by your post. Are you saying that you have a satellite receiver PC card? Because to receive satellite signals you will either 'need a set top box' satellite receiver or one that fits into a PC such as the 'Skystar' card eg like this: http://www.southernsatellite.co.uk/ click on PCI cards, the it would be something like this 'TechniSat SkyStar 2 TV PVR' Also to receive from Hotbird, the Sky dish will need swivelling round to the right(from behind) and up a bit. Your sky dish should be OK for that satellite. ( we can help with that later once you have the correct equipment sorted) Have a look at this link regarding some the figures you have quoted: http://www.lyngsat.com/hotbird.html I don't know what all your figues mean off the top of my head, But the frequency 11585MHz and the polarisation are the main things you need to worry about. How much do you want to spend? Which channel is that you are after? Robbo |

Gentlemen, many thanks for your time replying on my post. Sorry for a delay in reply.
BGonaSTICK: Short and clear. Gives me enthusiasm to start actually joining the satellite community! robbo71: Nope, I don't have satellite receiver PC card. I guess that's what I need to buy. I was just mumbling about my PC general specifications...which include a (ordinary I guess) 256 MB PCE-Express graphic card...I thought it might have been of some relevance, perhaps. Great news robbo71 about "my" (it's actually ex-tennants' ) dish... so one investment less !!!(let's see... how many pints is that :spite: )Great to know you folks are willing to help with advices, I mean it is really, truly, ![]() Thanks for the links too, very useful indeed. And about the channel...its RTS Satellite - Serbian satellite TV channel - free (uuuups, I hope I did not loose you now). But I am also after some quality sport, esp. football channels. How much I want to spend...well, only what is necessary. Not looking for some great tech wonders at this stage...as I mentioned, I am on a budget (at least another 2 years, until I finish slavery for a loan I've foolishly taken in my naive youth days...) But would not like to sacrifice too much of my "quality of life"... therefore would invest some monies in order to get this wotrking. |

Glad to be of help.
The good thing about this hobby, you can start off cheap if you want, and as your knowledge increases you can gradually get better kit as you go along. To get the greatest choice of football, you would probably want to go motorised, as it seems to pop up all over the place. I spotted this the other day ('Mouse over' Daily TV), it gives fixtures and what channel and sat they're on. _http://liveonsat.com/ and if you get stuck, when you get your kit and you need help, give us a shout. A skystar PCI card is only around £40 and can do fantastic things.
A 'normal' Set Top Box can be had for under £60 and can then be coaxed into opening a few good pay channels too. Have a look at either the Technomate TM1000D Super or the TM1500CI+ Super. All great value and either would give you hours of fun on your existing dish. You'll pretty soon want to upgrade the outside kit though, because there is even more to be had ![]() Many goodies are on Astra1 19.2E at the moment, and a monobloc LNB would make this easy to get in combination with Hotbird. Motorised is one better still, in terms of flexibility at least. This sticky is a couple of years old now, but still as relevant as it ever was: http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...opic,99.0.html Regards, STICK
