The ECM is the Entitlement Control Message, not to be confused with the other 'ECM' in the satellite world - the Electronic Counter Measure.
The Entitlement Control Message is used to pass the commands back and forth to the subscription card to validate your right to watch a particular encrypted stream. Providers use fake ECM's to catch out fake, or 'pirate' cards, and this is half the reason the term 'Electronic Counter Measure' exists. It doesn't really mean the same thing at all, but gets misused all the time. It's the EMM's (Entitlement Management Messages) though that carry most of the operational data, including changes to key values.

Robbo
You've been most helpful in this thread; I did the recommended hokery-pokery and, indeed Robert's ya father's brother, pictures and sound on 1-2-3. I Had Africa and Asia before on BISS. Maybe to clarify procedure: Go to each channel one at a time (I had to do each of the three channels individually); when on channel, press menu-system info-cas; go to ident 0030; press blue button on remote; move highlight away from 'Auto' to Line below it i.e. 06A7 etc; exit; save.
