I'm looking to upgrade my system from the current 80cm offset to something a bit larger, although the obvious answer is to get the biggest possible it boils to down to a choice between the Gibertini 1m or 1.25m. By moving the dish from it's current location to the new spot above gutter height I should be able to increase coverage out to about 63°E but it means it will be visible from the road and not far from (and above) the neighbours fence. Asthetics are an important consideration here so I don't want to take the p1ss which is why I'm not going to put my 1.2m Precison Antennas polar mount system up there, a 1.2 offset on an H2H is much less likely to get curtains twitching. So with that in mind is the extra 25cm of the larger dish worth the extra size/weight/visual impact/gain/cost? The larger dishes don't seem quite so easy to come by as the 1m versions and cost twice as much for an extra 2dB of gain, I'm not entirely sure how that converts into improved signal on something that is for example mostly blocking with partial sound. Don't suppose anyone has done a direct comparison have they?

Not a direct comparison but.... had a 1.05mtr Lenson Heath generic dish up for close on 10yrs so knew what it was capable of very well. Switched to the 125cm Gibbi a couple of years ago and got things that just weren't there before with the old 1mtr.
It will depend on what you are looking to watch as to whether you feel the bigger (and they are MUCH) dish is worth the extra or not. If you are a regular feedhunter or want to see the weaker satellites on a regular basis then the choice is obvious, however if you are just an occasional watcher of the odd footie feed here and there then the smaller one is probably more suited to your needs. Either way I wouldn't let it 'see' too far over the guttering of your house as these large dishes have a surprising wind loading in bad weather. I have mine now just under the gutter so I get to touch the wall at the extreme east position (62E). Not a great deal round that way in any case unless you have a native Russian speaker in the house ![]() Rgds L.

Thanks for the info L, feed hunting is my main interest but after what you said about it being a lot bigger I mocked one up to see how it looked from the road and as much as I'd like the extra gain I can see my ever patient neighbour complaining about the loss of daylight in his front room
Unfortunately the height is needed as it has to mount on the NE corner of the house and look over the roof which peaks due south, it's the only spot I can see the entire arc. Just need to work out what to do with the 1.2m system now, Ebay here I come I reckon, anyone know what a 1.2 precision prime focus with 18" superjack, ground post polar mount and C120 feedhorn is worth?

![]() The best way to find out is to stick a fair reserve on (£125/£150?) and chuck it on eBay. It will attract a fair bit of interest I would have thought.

I agree, but if it's too big, then it's too big. Got to keep the neighbour sweet I reckon

I know what you are saying but what else to do with it, we are here for the long term so it will gather rust in the corner of the garden till it falls apart or I could mount it at ground level and cover 30E-30W but then have the agro of explaining the multiplying dishes to my other half. Better I think to give it some TLC, flog it and use the money to get a dish I can put up and benefit from. I really do need to keep the neighbours sweet too, did I mention the wind up 40ft tower with radio antennas on it?

I'll make this my final comment on this thread, thanks for the advise and help but I've decided to stick with a 1m on the house because after reading through the forum I'm going to plant the 1.2m in the garden and experiment on C band! I've found a spot where it will see 45W-30E if I lop one of the trees and after seeing the threads on here it seems a 1.2 can be used with good results. The LNBf from the States is cheap enough to experiment with without worrying about it too much and it will give me the incentive to dig the hole and plant the dish. She will be pleased :roflmao:
I did see talk about the fortec stars but reading the Maplin website it states they aren't suitable for polar mounting, why is that, does it just need an adapter fabricated to fix it to a mount? Finally, I've got a couple of photos of the 1.2 precision in it's previous home, this was taken in Brighton and shows it pointing at ABS1 75E a few years ago, the pixellated image is a grab from Dubna TV on LMI/ABS-1 12517V taken on a very clear morning, estimated elevation was 0.6°!
