The BBC is set to cut more than 12 percent of its workforce, or more than 2,000 jobs, with the factual programming department being hardest hit, the Financial Times reported this morning. Director-General Mark Thompson is due to meet the BBC Trust next week to discuss how he intends to plug the £2 billion ($4.08 billion) budget shortfall the corporation faces following the last licence fee settlement. A spokeswoman said the broadcaster would not comment on the newspaper report in the meantime. The Financial Times said senior staff had been told to expect more than 2,000 redundancies while one person familiar with the situation said it could be nearer to 3,000. Any announcement of forced redundancies is likely to seriously damage morale at the BBC which has come under intense pressure in recent months following a string of TV deception scandals. Peter Fincham, the controller of its most high profile channel BBC One, was forced to resign last week after a report faulted him for wrongly implying Queen Elizabeth had stormed out of a photo shoot in anger.
