I think it was std. at the time, there would have to be some means of alignment.

I have not modded the stays at all. I did use a piece of screwed rod straight through the anchor points on the tube, I didn't think the alloy rivnuts at each side were particularly beefy. The 3" tube is only about 2mm thick and I thought that this would probably deform with the strong 'U' bolts on the 1224, so I positiond some close fitting steel washers inside the tube to line up with the clamping points.
