Default Absolute beginner

Hi there,
Recently moved into a flat which has dish fitted.
Purchased a Pace DS810XE reciever and have set it up ok (I think) but it has a USB slot! I've connected it to my PC but it's not being recognised?
What, if anything does the USB connection do?
Does the Pace receiver act as a skysat card?
If I download dvbdream will it find the pace box and dish?
Even if I cant connect my PC to my Pace box, what free stuff can I get on it? Got all the freeview stuff but would like UKTV gold etc but dont wanna pay for it and any other channels I'm not supposed to have

Great forum by the way, looks like a whole new world out there

Hi, Welcome to the forum,

Absolutely none of the encrypted Sky channels are available for free.

The FTV ones can be got with a freesat from sky card for £20,
the rest you need to subscribe to get.

Hi and welcome

The USB currently is not used for anything! strange but true...

This receiver will only unscramble foreign TV packages with the right card and cam, not Sky, you will however get the free channels on Sky satellite including BBC HD. I take it you have an HD TV.

To use a Skysat card or freesat card you will need a Sky receiver

Some receivers other than the Sky digibox can take valid SKY cards, the Octagon (apparently) and the Dreamboxes for example.
Also some CAMs eg the Trex/Dragon, not sure if these are useable in the above mentioned Pace receiver though.

Thanks for the help so far peeps. I guess the Pace box was a pretty useless investment as I have an old sky box and viewing card but really begrudge subscribing to those useles c**** after all the problems I've had with them historically.

On my channel list, "videoguard" comes up on the channels list next to the ones that flash up "no c.i module", I guess this is the encryption method they use?

Apart from being a tight arse one of the main reasons for this thread was to see if I could use the pc to record progs. I have freeview built into my TV but cant record from that obviously. I guess the only way forward for me is to go from Pace box to dvd recorder then?

I'll call the sponsors tomorrow regarding my card options.

Yes, Pace box ==> DVD recorder is probably your best capture option.

The Pace 810 is a bit of an enigma. The first of the true HD boxes to hit the market, but it's still far from sorted with regards to accepting a 'proper' CAM like the Diablo.

The required firmware upgrade is promised though, and when it arrives, the Pace/Diablo combination will be a killer.

Until then, a cheap alternative to do a little naughty viewing of football, porn and top movies is in order, and most of the Techno's will do that perfectly well.

So am I better off buying a sat card for my pc and waiting for upgrade then or is having two recievers ie my pace and a techno the better option?

Obviously any free footie, movies or porn wouldn't go amiss, I can get all the FTA channels already without a £20 sky card, would really like UKTV Gold though as I'm an old comedy show freak ops:

You could wait a long time for the Pace fix. They've been promising it for many many months.

Only you can decide whether a PCI card or an STB is better. The STB is better quality video and more convenient to watch in your lounge, the PCI card is more flexible and is a bit cheaper.

You can forget UKTV Gold unless you want to get into card sharing.

A taboo subject on many of the forums.

But, basically, one person buys a subscription, and via a network connection to the internet, a number of others can effectively use their card. I know no more than that.
