Default rs232 null modem cable

tried to buy a rs232 null modem cable at the worlds pc shop today!! they had no idea what i was talking about.
but then i do'nt either, (very newbie but trying)

i notice sometimes the word "serial" comes into the description of this cable

so what exactly is it called, and are they all the same,??

also where can i get one ??

any help is greatly appreciated

They used to be known as LapLink cables, but "null modem" is correct, yes. RS232 probably won't register with anybody, but serial certainly will.
I'd try some other computer places before PC World, if you can. PC World always stock tons of USB stuff, but nothing too out of the ordinary. You'll have more luck with the smaller guys.

It is called a null-modem c@ble.

and yes it is a serial c@ble.

The null modem c@ble differs from a standard serial in that some of the wires are crossed over.

Below is the wiring of a fully wired null-modem c@ble (most boxes don't require all those pins to be wired)

And you are right, PC-World don't sell them, I tried to get one from there.

They can be bought from a multitude of places on-line. I think Maplin do them too at £9.99

I just did a google seach for "null modem c@ble" , some company called 'cabling4less' came up, they sell the correct c@ble.

I've seen them new on eBay for a quid, plus the same again for postage.
