Default Some advice on dish size please...

Hi all,

I've decided on my choice of receiver now with a lot of help from this forum (well almost, i'm down to 2 anyway!). Next step is to figure out which dish to buy. I'm going for a motorised setup. My question is what size dish shall i get? I understand that bigger is essentially better, however, I have a battle of wills with my other half to contend with. I want to get an 80cm dish, but apparently thats too big given that we are keeping Sky (and hence our sky minidish) ! If I was to give in and get say a 60cm dish, would I still be likely to pick up a clear signal from the following satellites....

0.8W Thor 2,3
19.2E Astra
13.0E Hotbird 6,7A,8
16.0E Eutelsat W2
42.0E Turksat 1C, 2A

Hi, not sure where you are, but judging from what I can receive where I am, I would say:-

Thor-NO
Astra 1 -Yes
Hotbird-Yes
Eutelsat-No
Turksat Yes

Even with an 80cm Eutelsat may be touch and go, depending on where you are.
Not sure about Thor, I get it on my 90cm, but I have some branches in the way at the moment.

Cheers for the help.
I'm in Berkshire. If I was to get my way and get an 80cm dish would you say that would then good enough to get 0.8W Thor 2,3 and 16.0E Eutelsat W2 ??

Out of interest, is there some particular way of working out which dish sizes are necesary for the different Sats?

An 80 cm dish is the absolute minimum unless you will be happy with a restriction on the channels you are able to receive. 16E will disappear as soon as there are rain clouds. That is if you can get it in the first place.

I would strongly recommend a 90 cm dish since if you are motorising you will soon want to search out some of the lower powered satellites. Put it up while SWMBO is not looking and tell her its 60 cm. Men always lie about size.

Hiya m8,

I would imagine you'd pick at least something up of all those sats with an 80cm However, rain and heavy cloud would probably just about see off 16E & 1W, or at the very least produce a lot of picture break up :?

Below is a link to lyngsat's map of 16E's & 1W footprint, complete with expected dish sizes. I take it with a pinch of salt though because the projected UK dish sizes look a pretty ambitious to me :?

EDIT: Jim's beat me to it

With an 80cm dish you should get Thor 2 but not Thor 3.

Was looking at that, I does seem to suggest 60cm or so might be sufficient. Didnt realise the weather can have such an effect though.

get a 1 meter dish and tell her dishes are measured form the middle out so you have only got a 50cm one
