Default Declination Angle HELP!!!

Hi all,

Just got my dish mounted etc and all up and running.

However, i have 92 % signal level and only 2% quality!!!!!

I am stuck on the delination angle.
What is this and how (in basic terms) do i set it?

According to the motor manual it should be 7.3 but my dish wont adjust that far!!!

Am i doing something very wrong here???

Help much appreciated!!!

Hi niceguy,

The setting for the declination angle can be a bit confusing when trying to set it by looking at the instructons.

What it boils down to is getting the dish elevation correct (using the AZ/EL mount on the actual dish).

As per STICKS guide, you can set it by adjusting for max signal instead.

I think this is the easiest way:-
Start off with the motor facing roughly south, and the dish face roughly vertical ( with motor at 0).

Simply motorise the dish to your closest due south satellite, then forget for a moment and pretend you have a fixed dish.
Adjust the dish elevation and swivel the motor around the pole for maximum signal.

If 1W is your closest due south, be sure to select a strong transponder in the receiver, If I remember right its is 11325H which carries BBC World FTA. (confirmed just checked)

Hi Robbo.

I have my box at bbc world on 1.0w thor and signal level is 92%

But my quality is only 2% and whatever i do to the dish it wont move up and i cannot recive anything.

How does level and quality differ?
Also the declination angle in the maunal states 7.9 but then it says 30????

I havent got a clue what or where the angle is set!!!

The signal level is just the amount of rf power that the tuner is seeing at that frequency.

The quality level is the important one, as it shows how well the signal is being decoded.

The markings on the dish back are unreliable, and also the angle that is actually set on the back of this will depend on the 'crank'
(the bend on the motor shaft) on the motor shaft. You will also need to know the 'offset' angle of the dish to put into the given equations.

Is there any chance yoo could post a pic from the side with the dish at 0 ( or 1w), it may help us to see it.

I have tried adjusting the dish to all sorts of angles and to be honest none of the levels change at all on the box.

Im just wondering if i may have a duff lnb?

The quality level is flickering rapidly from 3 to 6% and is not stable at all.

Hi Niceguy, have you checked your 'F' connectors to make sure you have a good connection?

Also, have you used decent cable and are sure there is no water in it?

If it is easy to get to, try setting the motor to a strong sat, say 13E and a strong channel (BBC World) and then connect the cable directly to the lnb rather than through the motor to see if that improves things.

From the picture I can see that the dish elevation is far too high. When the dish face is vertical, it will be 'looking' up by 20 to 30 degrees already (depends on dish offset angle). Make the dish face so it is just tilting upward slightly, as the required elevation will be about 30 degrees.

Have a you got a sky dish?, If so try and point it the same way that is looking, (whilst tuned to BBC1), the signal from that is even stronger than Hotbird( If you can't manage to find that)
( Just to test out the LNB, you understand, and to have a practice at dish aligning, only small movements of dish at a time are needed)

Here is a picture of wods setup, and the sort of dish elevation angle you want for 1W.

Cheers!

Found sky no prob.

However, whilst tweaking i lost the signal and i cant find it again so now im back to square one.

So anyways, that confirms the lnb is ok.

I guess i just got to carry on and try and locate it again.

Sheesh. No wonder people get them installed by professionals!

Does this look 'about' right?
