Is it possible to double my bandwidth by cloning my own modem?

Hi everyone,

I'm on VM 20M BB.

I was wondering if it was possible to clone my own modem MAC address to another same model modem i have at home, then put a splitter on the cable feed coming in and have two outward feeds going to my modem and the cloned modem?

The only bit I'm unsure about is having two modems with the same MAC address on the network but with different IPs (I take it each modem will request a DHCP IP when I connect them). Then there's the problem of putting the two modems in a pool with some load balancing software, I'm thinking a small Linux system with three ethernet cards could achieve this (probably run a firewall on there too), two nics would be load balanced coming from the modems and the other could go off to my router.

Does anyone have this sort of setup? Is there a flaw in my plan? I have two PCs at home so I'd be able to test that both modems can operate together quite easily.

Any help appreciated.

Each MAC address will only work once on each segment of the network (UBR). What you suggest will work if you get a working MAC from an adjacent UBR.

You can load share with a Linux box as you suggest or get a load-balancing Router.

Based on what you've said the only way I can think of to achieve what I want is to have some sort of custom IP stack running on my computer. For example, have two nics configured with the same IP address on the same computer, the odd destination tcp sockets goes via one nic and the evens go via the other. Like I said, this would have to be a custom IP stack.
