Default Is a viewing card transferable

Sorry, I'm a complete novice and don't know a thing about Sky.

I've been given a sky digibox, leads, remote, instructions and it has a dark blue digital viewing sky card in it with a yellow house.

There was already a dish here when we moved so there's a cable to the living room.

can I just connect it all up and away I go, or will the card not work?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I did try a search but mustn't have been putting in the right terms.

Hi Armadillo, welcome to the forum.

If the card/receiver has been disconnected for a while, you will need to connect it up and let it update itself. It should work fine after a while.

One problem you will have is that the default areas for BBC and ITV etc will be the area in which the card was first issued. Channel 1 will come up as the BBC area it was originally activated. You then have to search for your local area channel if you are looking for local news.

I bought a secondhand digibox/card that was activated in Scotland so the default is all heathen. Sky told me there was no way they could reset the card or they couldn't be bothered.

It all depends on how long the card has been inactive for.

Switch it on and leave it overnight tuned to BBC1. Hopefully the card will reactivate to allow you to watch the Free to view stuff like Sky 3, CH4, CH5 etc etc.

If it doesn't you will need to get a freesat card from Sky. If you want to subscribe you will need a new card which sky will only be more than happy to send one to you

Thanks Jimdefruit and Nanochicken for your replies. The box and card have come from somewhere else in the same county, so that should be ok.

Are you saying I won't be able to get any extra channels with the Sky card than I am already getting with Freeview?

Freeview has some channels that sky don't provide with a free to air card at the moment such as E4, more 4 and Dave. But you still get more than you will ever get from freeview. If you cant get channel 4 or 5 leave it all switched on with the card in for 24 hours, if you still cant get 4 and 5 then your card is out of date.

I think you will get a lot more but most are not worth the effort of pushing the remote button.
