Default Freesat to use Eurobird.

Just found this, don't know if its out of date or true, but it doesn't look like Freesat from ITV/BBC etc will be using Astra.

BBC ITV et al are not going anywhere - before our expat members get very excited remlap is right - only the epg and other data streams will be carried on EB1.

The Freesat platform is to use the Eurobird 1 satellite situated at 28.5° east, this has a far wider footprint than the Astra 2D satellite currently used by both the BBC and ITV. Arqiva have confirmed to the Astra 2D Website, that tests are being carried out on transponder C5, 11.385 horizontal polarization.
not how it reads.

I would imagine the the transmissions on Astra2D will continue, they certainly won't transmit everything twice from the same location. Eurobird will likely carry the default channel, EPG data and maybe a few channels with no copyright issues - BBC/ITV News, BBC World, shopping channels etc

I dont doubt there are ongoing tests - there are all sorts of hidden data streams scattered around 28E. I assure you though that the main BBC/ITV channels will not be leaving 2D - if for no other reason theres simply insufficient capacity on EB1 for them all to move ( about 9 full tp's required) and anyway, both BBC & ITV have long term carriage contracts with SES Astra.
