Default Computer hanging on boot up

Hi all,

Having a problem with my PC at the moment. When I boot up my computer, immediately after the initial BIOS screen, is hangs with a flashing cursor in the top left corner. After a few minutes, it continues to boot as normal and onces it's up, there are no problems. I've tried checking everything is secured properly, disconnecting the main components and plugging them back in etc. I thought my XP may have become corrupted so I tried using the XP disk on boot up. However, it seems to be hanging before it gets to the actual bootup process as it still hangs before entering the XP disk.

Any ideas whats happening?

Thanks.

How long has this been happening? Have you tried a system restore?

About 3-4 days. Actually, it happened after I disconneted my computer completely to clean out the dust and then reconnected it, which is why I thought something may have come loose. Everything seems secure though.

Haven't tried a restore yet. I haven't imaged my disk in a couple of weeks and have installed some stuff in the meantime which I had to spend about an hour playing around with to get working properly, so I was hoping to find a solution before trying a restore and having to reinstall the software (and probably spend another hour messing about with it).

I'm so sorry to hear that, I don't think I can help, seems to me a case of "If it ain't broke don't fix it"

Good luck

Yeah, the fan was getting a bit dusty and starting to make some strange noises which is why I had to clean it out.

Thanks for your help though...

Mkae sure any external cards (video / sound etc) are fully seated. Also make sure the ram chips havent shaken loose or got oxidised connections. Unlikely but Ive seen both in years of running BIG computer networks (300+ computers!)

I've checked for connections being loose but I'll try again.

What would an oxidised connection look like? And how would I clean it?

Cheers.

I've had computers freeze squinting down IDE cables for drives that aren't there. You didn't unplug any of the drives or anything, did you?
