Default Newbie getting started

Hello, I'm new to all this so apologies if these questions have already been answered. I've just bought a Maplin kit as my first step into the world of satellites. I used to play around with my OnDigital box in the good old days when they had programmes worth watching.
I've been reading some of the posts and want to upgrade my SL65/12 receiver. The chip is an Ali M3329 B1. I have downloaded Ali Firmware fixer 0.4b and truman emu 1.3.79.abs file and think I'm ready to go!
My question is do I need any other software and do I basically just check the 3 COMAG boxes (Mando, Audio, Display), fix up the null modem and cross my fingers for good luck? What are the hardware mod diagrams I can see in the info tab - do I need to worry about these? What are they for. Also can I repatch the box with old software if necessary or is this a one way trip? Can I somehow download the current firmware and save it for emergencies? Any help would be much appreciated. SlyBadger.

you will also need to get the updater that will allow you to update allcode+bootloader if it is the first time you are going to flash it .

Slybadger, welcome to the wonderful plaything known as the SL65

First read the sticky in this section by Yorks about patching the SL65/12 if you haven't already done so. We now use different files but the process is much the same. Go to truman-support dot com >soft>tools and download upgrade 070814.rar. Using a null modem cable, you can use it to back up the firmware on your box (haven't done it myself, but I'm pretty sure you can - just use the flash dump setting and save the file as a .bin).

Don't worry about using the Ali Universal Fixer - it's already been done for you. Instead, go to sat-ulc dot com and register. You will see a row of buttons at the top. Click on database. Scroll down the long list of receivers on the left to SL-Serie (Comag ....), then sub-section SL65-35. In there you will find a post "Truman Mod SL65B1 - Hispa,Hot,Astra". Download that file. It's version 1.3.79 - the latest. Upload that to your receiver using the option allcode+bootloader inthe dropdown menu as Andysly said, reboot, and voila!

You will have to load new keys at some point. You can get them from truman-support, too. You will need ali_key_upgrade.exe or ali toolbox 1.5b.

Final tip: before starting the upgrade software, power your box off completely, then when the software says "testing serial port" turn it on. Don't touch anything else until you are sure the flashing has finished.

Good luck!
Sol

Hello slybadger,

Welcome to our humble abode.

We have been having a bit of fun with this little receiver recently. Andysly and solunauk have pretty much covered it. But I'm sure we will be able to help you if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Yorks

Couple of problems.

1) Not much luck saving current firmware. I select a filename and then continue, then it connects to the box but hangs at 0%. After 30 seconds or so the cancel button greys out and the back button lights up again.

2) Tried loading new firmware 1.3.79 and get the message "loader version is older than exist one". Any ideas?

Slybadger.

Hi mate. Have you selected the allcode+bootloader option.

Try using this loader, it's the one I used for that FW. And do what Yorks said.

OK. I think I'm getting closer! It seems to have uploaded something to the box and written it. I clicked finished but now the box won't turn on. Both lights are displayed - power and standby - butcan't seem to switch it on with the power button or the remote. Any ideas?
