Default Router query

Hi. I was originally running my broadband directly via my virgin modem, then bought my daughter a laptop so then required a router, anyways i bought a D-link 521 and connected it all up, but now i find my connection speed has slowed down. Anybody know why??

I dont think a 521 is a correct model number. Have you by any chance bought a 801.11b model which runs at a slower speed than current standards?

Also does it have wired lan connections? If so they should run at full speed.

That 524 should be fine. If you are connecting wirelessly then you will see a reduction in speed.

The back of the router has 4 RJ45 connection sockets so you can connect direct to your pc or other devices rather than using a wireless lan card/usb stick.

D-link are a decent make, you shouldnt really have any problems with it, have a look it the settings page on the router and see if there is an option for speed control, also make sure you use some sort of encryption as someone could be using you connection wirelessly.

Turn on mac filtering and disable broadcast SSID, this should stop low level hackers

Explain further how it slowed down. It could just be you, or a coincidence. :]

As you are using it as a wired router, can you check that your pc lan card is set to 100 mbps. The router spec allows 10/100 and it may be that the router is seeing the card as 10 mbps rather than 100.
