Default Channel 4 to join Freesat imminently.

A bit out of date I know.

Sky encryption contract will run out "imminently"
Tuesday September 25, 2007
Channel 4 to join Freesat

Channel 4 will be joining the Freesat line-up in 2008 when its encryption contract with Sky expires.

The broadcaster will be part of Freesat from its launch in early 2008, thanks to Film4, but the other Four-branded channels are currently covered by a Sky encryption contract.
A Channel 4 source confirmed that the expiry date of the contract - which ties Channel 4, E4 and More4 to the Freesat from Sky system - is "imminent", and it will not be renewed. Sadly, it won't run out in time for the Channel 4 family to join Freesat at launch.

Our source added that Channel 4's channels will be moved to Astra 2D so they can broadcast unencrypted to the UK, without worries of spilling across Europe (well, not too much), and Channel 4 will be acquiring more capacity on 2D for its timeshift and high definition channels.
Unfortunately, a shortage of further space on Astra 2D's spot beam could prevent other broadcasters with high-value content from joining Freesat, or launching hi-def channels.

Thats jumping the gun from Wotsat - I have my doubts about the accuracy of that date - as far as I know the C4 encryption contract expires mid 2008.

hmm interesting also if astra 2d is going to be used for the freesat channels like bbc, itv etc they could get encrypted channels moved off it as its silly to have encrypted channels on there

It depends how the contracts are written though. If Disney RTE & the othersd have contracted for specific 2D tp's then thats where they will stay until the contracts come up for renewal
