Hi I am new to this forum and hope someone can advise me.
I live in Tripoli Libya and before moving here i was advised that if i took my sky + box out with me and my viewing card and kept my UK subscription live then I could obtain all the sky programmes that I had in the uk providing I had a 2.6 meter dish installed. I did all of that and can pick up some programmes but not the main UK ones like BBC or ITV. I have a quad LNB on the dish Any help would be appreciated. Regards Mick. |

Welcome Lybia Mick.
The channels you are having trouble with are on the 2D beam which is very tight. Have a look here: _http://www.astra2d.com/footprint.htm You may just get something by tweaking your dish but it does vary from place to place.

Welcome mick. You will probably need something around 3.6m if you want the BBC / ITV programmes.
http://www.astra2d.com/world.htm (3m in Algeria, 3.6m in Egypt)

Thanks guys will check out both your options.
The annoying thing is that Sky cards Europe sent me the below e-mail before I left the U.K. although I am not sure if they are sky people but I did get their e-mail address from the sky U.K.site. This is what they e-mailed me YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST A 1.9M DISH TO RECEIVE BBC AND ITV, DO NOT CANCEL YOUR SKY + SUBSCRIPTION AS YOU WILL BE ABLE TO RECIEVE THIS IN LYBIA, DO NOT INFORM SKY IN THE UK THAT YOU WILL BE VIEWING OUT OF THE UK AS THEY WILL TERMINATE YOUR VIEWING CARD AND RECORDING FACILITY, YOU CAN TAKE YOUR BOX AND CARD WITH YOU AND IT WILL WORK. YOU MAY NEED TO CHANGE THE FREQUENCY. Thanks again Best Regards Mick. |

I am surprised you got their email address from the Sky UK website
![]() As they are not supposed to officially condone subscribers receiving Sky outside the UK. Note, they have said "at least 1.9m", they have not specified an actual dish size. Besides, you can receive the Sky channels OK, it is just the FTA off 2D that you can't get. Down in Cyprus they have to use 4.2m dishes to get 2D. Getting the 2D beam outside its official footprint is not an exact science unfortunately.Robbo

Hi Robbo.
The below is the e-mail address i picked up from the sky site when using the search engine on sky and entering viewing Libya and it came back with Sky cards europe [info@skycardseurope.com] Sorry but you are to technical for me I am afraid (Its an age thing) so do not understand your meaning of FTA of 2D. We can get some sky channels but again I have no idea why some and not others. For instandce i can get Channel 4 but not ITV nor BBC. Nor can I get film 4. Living channel is okay in the day but I loose it at night. I can get sky 1 , 2 and 3. I can get about half of the documentary channels and about 4 UK food type channels. I do not subscribe to the film channels not the sports channels so cannot comment on them. I could get a 3m dish but they are telling me it will cost just for the dish 1,600 UK pounds and thats a lot of cash and even then it may not work or so I believe. Q Someone mentioned that the LNB would give a better signal if it was just a dual and not a quad. Is this true and is there special types of LNB that picks up better signals than others? I was thinking on the lines of a booster. UK telivision is soooo important out here for the ladies as there is nothing else to do. Best regards. Mick. |

The search facility on the Sky site doesn't limit the results to Sky-affiliated resources - you can find loads of highly illegal things using it!
![]() You are in breach of your Sky contract whilst viewing in Lybia. If Sky find out they will cut your card off without warning. No need to worry about it though. Sky don't go looking for folks like you because it suits them to have the extra income - they just can't be seen to be doing it because of licensing conditions etc. You will need a much bigger dish. 3.6 meters by the sound of it. And yes, they are expensive. 2K+ probably. It depends on how much you miss your Brit-TV I suppose. Different channels are broadcast from different 'transponders' on different satellites and via different beams. None of this is particularly important to you. All it means is that you will get some channels and not others unless you get a huge dish. That's the only thing that matters. Good luck, and let us have some pictures if you get one! ![]() STICK

3.5m should give you a reasonable chance, but extreme fringe reception is not an exact science - it could be a lot more if Tripoli happens to be in a "cold spot" for reception

Hi,
We set up a 2.8 metere dish as anything bigger would cost around 3,000lyd. Using our original subscription with Sky I set up my SKY + box and can receive about 70% of programmes and can get channel 4 but not BBC or ITV. You need about a 3.5 meter dish and then could get the other channels. One word of warning whatever you do make sure that you have a stabaliser fitted to the power suppkly else with the supply out here you will get a surge and this could blow out your sky box. This has happened to me and i now have to get it back to the Uk for repair. Q Where are you located in Libya I am in Janzour area of Tripoli. Regards. Mick. |
