Default Exploding freeview box

Tonight the freeview box in the living room literally exploded

It was in standby and wasn't being used, ther was a very loud bang and the box jumped about 1 inch in the air followed by a cloud of acrid black smoke and a scramble behind the TV for the plug.

Photos are of burnt bit on circuit board and burns to inside of casing.

It was a Digihome DVB915 and only about 18 month's old.

Hah! I remember a bunch of Grundigs had this problem. It was dodgy caps in the power supply, if I remember correctly. Then again, with a name like Digihome, your poor box was probably a bunch of dodgy everything Hope you can source a replacement easily.

Not going to bother, sticking with satellite, I can honestly say though the 2 Sagem freeview boxes we have (both cost £20) never give a problem, never stick, lose signal, or as the digihome and Matsui boxes and the orion IDTV dose, lose sound for a second. But as i say sticking with satellite, roll on freesat. Its amassing the signal coming from a satellite 26.000 miles away is more reliable than a signal from the TV transmitter 30 miles away.

Tesco now list it as a SEG and the price is up to £20.

SEG Single Scart Set Top Box AESEGS7 - Tesco.Direct

I got mine from Amizon.

Amazon.co.uk: DIGIHOME DVB915 FREEVIEW Digital Terrestrial Receiver with SCART Lead: Electronics & Photo

... we are lucky more fires dont occur .. as 90% of the apliances are in standby mode .. at sometime or other .. esp when ZZZzzz sleeping !! our new LCD tv hasnt got a on-off mains switch .. just standby. as far as the exploding cap in the PSU of that STB .. just bad luck id say. the nature of switched mode PSU,s lead to high spikes & mains voltage just a milli-second away!! dont think about it. make sure your house insurance is good. ha ha

from the pictyre it look like the remaining black capacitor is alo close to dying out, you can see that the top has "domed" slightly
