Yes patching is done at your own risk, though it will never blow it up. Do it wrong though and it could stop it working.The procedure itself is very easy though, there is a sticky in this section.

You cannot use a SKY card in your receiver, however you can receive all the Free to Air channels on 28.2 and 28.5 east (your SKY dish). These include BBC1,2,3,4,ITV1,2,2+1,3,3+1,4. Also about 150 other channels with the exception of CH4 and Five.
Patching is very easy to do and will open several 100,s of channels on various satellites.
