Hello again,

Well, I put it all together, but no image yet.
The dish, 65x75 cms, is pointing in the same direction as a few others that I can see. South west, more or less. It is mounted on a wall inside a balcony and has a good view of the sky. I'll have to see about posting a pic of it.

On the search screen I choose a satellite and then I start the search. All channels. There are also 2 verticle meters. One shows between 65 to 90, and the other is always on 20. I assume that's %. The manual doesn't explain anything about this. I have changed the position of the dish, but the result is always nothing found. LNB is set on universal.

Is a meter recommended?

Cheers
John

Which satellite are you trying to get?

What is you location?

You don't need a meter, you can use the one built into your receiver. Those two vertical meters, one is probably signal level and the other signal quality. The signal quality one needs to be maximised.

A satellite finder meter, may make things a little easier but not essential. But for ease, it is best that you can see a meter/your TV screen , whislt making adjustments.

To find out where to point your dish, use one of the online calculators. There are a few mentioned here:-

Dish Setup - Angle Calculators

I use the satlex.de one, very simple to use.

Hi Robbo,

I'm in sunny Seville. Bit cold today. 12C

At the moment I'm concentrating my efforts on Hispasat 30W

The meters have 2 letters above them. S & Q. Signal level and signal quality I suppose. Quality is a constant 20%. Better than 0%

I'll try getting the wife to watch the signal strength while I move the dish.

Thanks Robbo

Btw, I just disconnected the cable from the back of the decoder and both signal strengths went down to 20%. So, looks like 20% is actually 0%. Not good seeing that quality is always 20%.

Can cable length have much if any effect?

Not always very easy to do it like that.

Especially with a wife on the other end.

If you have a portable telly, I would suggest you run it off the RF output of the receiver, and plonk it near where the dish is, so that you can see those meters.

For your location, the elevation scale on the back of the dish should be set to about 40 degrees.
And the dish looking west by about 27 degrees.

Also the SKEW of the LNB wants to be about 28 degrees clockwise (looking from behind the dish)

What is the length of the cable?
and what type of cable are you using?

The cable is FC-75 ohms. At the moment there's 30m of it, which could have 7 or 8 removed.
I think I'll have to revise the dish angle. Could mean moving the mounting.

That cable should be OK up 30m, although it is difficult to find a specification for it. Looks like it double screened and all copper, so it should be fine.

The cable is quite thick. Copper core, foil etc. I routed it around the flat so that it wasn't so visible. Through the cable tubes in the wall. Through the air conditioning duct. Took me ages!! Probably used twice as much cable as well.

Anyway, I think I'll have to get signal meter. I've tried tweeking the dish but the signal strength only increases by 5% and the signal quality has never budged off 20%, which is what it reads with the cable disconnected. ¡Me cago en la leche!

ho hum........forever onwards and upwards.............
