Yep, as usual, we're going to be plunged into confusion-city again, with the proprietary Sky platform, Freeview 1 and Freeview 2 all running at the same time.

Great.

Ofcom are selling us down the river again. **** Sky off, and run HD on Freeview 1 by allocating bandwidth from analogue instead of lining the Treasury's pocket with pieces of silver.

Depends on how many channels Sky can persuade (bribe) to join their package - it could end up with 2 or 3 out of the 6 MUX's in MPEG4. Then the public service channels would be under pressure to switch to get more bandwidth for HD and the bandwagon is rolling.

On Freeview, there are 4 transmission modes of which only 2 are currently utilised. Whilst I cant remember the details, maybe these were created with HD in mind. Also, I appreciate that the boxes have an MPEG decoder, but can the firmware these hold be updated to do MPEG4 or do any of these have MPEG 4 SPs built in? Afterall, a lot of DVD players and recorders do DIVEX and it would seem to me that if these ICs are ubiqitous, they may already be used in some STB and IDTVs.

Or it could be just as you have all said, the government will expect us all to shell out again.

we will have to shell out yet again. When you come to think of it I don't see how freeview has ever been free, By the time you have got the box then realised you need a new aerial and been ripen off by the local aerial fitter you have shelled out more than any basic satellite system costs.

An advantage of satellite, as you can easily fit your own dish, as it can be lower down, so no clambering about on scary roofs.
