While a Dreambox is a very good machine, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are fairly computer literate and have a great deal of patience

These are Linux based and are very powerful pieces of kit. If you are confident you can tame one of these machines then go for it You'll get all the help you need off the Dreambox owners on here

If all you're after is a bit of Saturday afternoon football, then save you're money (and sanity) and get yourself something like a Technomate 1500 or 5400 for around £100 and a DigitAlb card (£150 for 12 months). These are excellent receivers in there own right and are very simple to use.

To sum up, if you're serious about satellite tv, and have loads of patience and are confident on a pc, then go for the Dreambox (7020 is a popular choice but the Dreamboxers will help you out in that department).

If not, and all you're after is some footy, then go for the Technomate. I have two of these and they are probably the best value STB's on the market today

Welcome to the forum havwood.

If you are happy using windoze explorer and moving files between folders then you will cope quite easily with a Dreambox. You dont need to know anything about linux unless you want to.

For the best results you will need a router on your computer network so that the Dreambox can connect direct with internet servers.

The Dreambox will get almost everything currently available and will update with a couple of button presses. It also reads most if not all official cards.

I would have a tendency to agree with MShip on the view that the Dreambox is not a very good choice for a novice user

I am in the fortunate position to have used both Technomate 1000 series receivers and Dreambox receivers and i can definately say that the Technomate is a fantastic piece of kit if your just starting out. It will open most cards when patched with the exception of NDS (BskyB) cards and probably the new Nagra3 card (TV Cabo)

You have to have the patient of a saint when you first buy a Dreambox as they can be extremely frustrating up until the point where you get it up and running. Mine nearly went out the window on several occasions

Fortunately many of the new images available are making it much easier to install emus and other pieces of software directly from the box without the need to program it all from your PC

The Dreambox is a great piece of kit but be warned it may take you some time to get it up and running
