Default Angry Wife

Hi. I have recently moved to Izmir on the west coast of turkey. I have had a satellite installed and currently pickup on Hotbird. However, the wife is missing her good old English television so i am now on a mission trying to find out how/if i can recieve normal UK terestrial broadcasts.

I have read on other sites that i can pickup astra (north beam? and south beam?). My questions are qimple,

What channels are available on Astra?
Wahts the difference between North Beam and South Beam?
Can i really recieve it in Turkey?
What size dish would i need (i have read differnet figures from 0.8-1.5)?
Do i need any specific receiver?

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated as the wife is now giving me grief about this daily!!

Thanks

Hi, Welcome to the forum.

To receive the Sky channels the easiest way to do it is to use a Sky Digibox.

The footprint maps on Lyngsat give a rough guide to the dish size needed to receive the sky channels:

Sky Digital on Astra 2A/2B/2C/2D & Eurobird 1 at 28.2°E - LyngSat

Channel 4 and channel 5 should be on that list somewhere.

The other terrestrial channels like BBC and ITV are off the 2D beam, which is tightly focussed on the UK, but can be received with a large enough dish in other parts of Europe, if you are lucky.

Its not an exact science however. Down in Cyprus for example, to get the 2D channels they need anything from 2.4 to 4.2m dishes. I imagine the West coast of Turkey, would be similar or maybe even worse, like 5m.

There is the BBC Prime channel, on hotbird, but its encrypted in Viaccess, part of the TPS package. You can decode however with a suitable patch. The TM1000 series amongst others will do it with the latest patch.

I think you can subscibe to it separately, but I'm not sure what satellite its on, it might be Hotbird in seca.
BBC prime is also on Hotbird, part of the Sky Italia package, but they would need a third party subscription and a sky italia box.
